Always Run Program as Administrator in Windows 7

Comments

There are times that you need to run programs in Windows 7  as administrator. For instance, if you want to use the command prompt to do administrative tasks, you need to run as administrator or when you use Notepad to edit protected system files you need to have administrative privileges.

On top of that, if you happen to run programs in Windows 7 and you encounter Access Denied or No Permission type of error, then running as administrator should solve the problem in most cases.

Now, to run as Administrator you can right click on any program shortcut and select “Run as administrator”. You will need to do this every time you want tot run the program as administrator. It will get a little annoying if you need to do this frequently and over and over again. But wait, there is a life saving shortcut to enable you to always run any program as administrator.

Always Run Program as Administrator

It is fairly straight forward. Just follow these steps:

Note: Make sure you are logged in as admin or has administrative privileges.

  1. Right click on the program shortcut that you want and select Properties.
  2. Select Compatibility tab and under Privilege level, tick “Run this program as an administrator”.
  3. Click Apply and close the Properties window.
Run as Admin Option

Edit the compatibility option

You are good to go!

Now, every time you launch the program, it will be launched with proper administrative privileges.

One thing to note is that for native Windows 7 programs like Notepad and Command Prompt, you can’t apply this trick because those programs are part of Windows 7. So, the only way to run these programs as administrator is to right click and select “Run as administrator”.

I have a question about this setting.
Why the program failed to startup automatically after I set "Run this program as administrator".
    Thanks a lot.
  • Can you describe more on this? What do you mean by "failed to startup automatically"?
